What is Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support?

ACLS stands for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support. An ACLS certification course teaches all students how to diagnose and administer care for an adult victim of cardiac and respiratory arrest, as well as any other cardiopulmonary emergency.

The course is designed to facilitate learning for healthcare professionals (physicians and nurses) with respect to techniques and procedures regarding advanced life support in medical emergency situations.

Who is Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for?

People who must have ACLS certification are all physicians and nurses, especially those who work in the emergency department, critical care and intensive care units. For example:

What does Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support cover?

  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED

  • Airway management

  • Related pharmacology

  • Management of ACS and stroke
